New FaithInvest study shows smaller faith groups face significant challenges when seeking to invest in line with their values – and offers solutions
Recent years have seen a growing awareness among faith groups of the need to ensure their investments reflect their beliefs and values, rather than inadvertently funding activities that conflict with those values.
However, doing so is more complex and challenging than it might appear initially, and smaller faith groups – those with under $100m in assets under management, and often well below that amount – face particular obstacles.
Now FaithInvest, has released a white paper exploring these challenges – and offering some solutions. The paper, Faith-Consistent Investing and Smaller Organisations, explains that challenges arise when the often limited resources of small plans are stretched to meet the significant requirements for creating unique, customised investment programmes that reflect a faith’s values, and when trade-offs must be made between investment efficiency and customisation for faith-driven priorities. Several kinds of potential solutions, in the form of real-world examples, are described.

World Evangelical Alliance and FaithInvest collaborate to grow faith-consistent investing
The World Evangelical Alliance and FaithInvest have signed a collaboration agreement setting out how they will work together to increase faith-consistent investing globally to achieve a more just and sustainable world.
The aim is to enable the Alliance's network of 600 million evangelical Christians worldwide to take a deeper look at how and where their money is used as well as to support faith-based entrepreneurs and communities to develop investible enterprises designed to protect the environment and address social concerns.
As well as providing opportunities for WEA’s network to access FaithInvest’s training, services and expertise, the two organisations will work together on joint events and projects. One of the first of these is a proposed major event in Geneva, Switzerland, in January 2024 bringing faith-based investors together in an 'alternative Davos' to look at values-driven approaches to the economy, around the time of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting.
Members of the FaithInvest team headed to Hong Kong this week for a packed and exciting week of discussions with key faith partners.
The schedule includes a presentation to senior faith leaders and leaders of environmental organisations at Hong Kong University, a meeting with a Daoist organisation on faith-aligned investing, and a forum with JPMorgan. You can read more about the Hong Kong trip on our News page HERE.
Closer to London, FaithInvest is teaming up with Christian Aid in mid-May to co-host a conference exploring the opportunities for business, investment and faith-inspired development agencies to invest justly and sustainably in the emerging "new economy". It will address key questions such as moving on from a 100% grant-based model, the connection with economic empowerment and inclusion, and what forms of investment can work, among others. Although this conference is by invitation only, we will report the findings of this event, which we believe will be of interest to faith-based asset owners.
