Investing in a Liveable Future
We had a very successful, lively and engaging Investing in a Liveable Future: Faith, Business and Developmentconference in London last week, co-hosted with Christian Aid and its Salt Business Network. A full report will be coming soon but here are few key takeaways:
More than 100 delegates, many of them CEOs or senior leadership team
Over £650 billionAUM (assets under management) represented
Projects supporting more than 100 million people a year represented
Faith-aligned development agencies, family offices, asset managers, philanthropies and business networks
The event discussed whether investments and non-aid financing mechanisms such as blended finance could be used, alongside philanthropy, to fund a just and sustainable future for people and planet.
The current state of affairs
Before our Liveable Future conference, we surveyed 20 development agencies, most faith-aligned, on the use of non-aid financing mechanisms where – in addition to social benefits – some kind of investment return is expected.
61% are very interested and 39% are moderately interested
61% are already using them
78% think it likely or very likely that their NGO will use them in the next three years.
We'll be producing a white paper from the research as well as from the event. In the meantime, to see the event presentations, click below.
FaithInvest and the Laudato Si' Movement – the world's biggest global Catholic environmental network – will hold an online webinar tomorrow to discuss how faith organisations can better align their values and their finances.
The webinar (part of this year's global celebration of Laudato Si' Week) will introduce four new sector-specific resources aimed at dioceses, religious congregations, universities and schools, and covering four topics: sustainable investment, divestment, sustainable banking and sustainable insurance. Speaking at the webinar will be:
Dr Lorna Gold, FaithInvest's Director of Movement Building
Elizabeth Garlow, FaithInvest's Senior Advisor on Catholic investing
Kayoko Lyons, Director of Investments for the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Joseph D'halluin, Laudato Si' Movement campaigner on divestment
Read the FULL ARTICLE on our website. This webinar is open to all – don't miss it! As well as introducing the new guides, there will be a Q&A. Registration link below.
In a discussion with TBLI GROUP Chairman Robert Rubenstein, Martin Palmer will discuss how religions became strong defenders of the environment, from WWF's early interest, through the Alliance of Religions and Conservation organisation, to the ZUG Guidelines and the launch of FaithInvest. Tomorrow: tickets cost EUR 25.
FaithInvest's quarterly FCI gathering: Thursday June 1
09.00 EST, 15.00 BST, 16.00 CET, 17.00 EAT
At this quarter's forum we'll hear from the chair of the English Sangha Trust on the EST's faith-consistent investment programme and recent enhancements pursued with input and guidance from FaithInvest. We'll also share updated findings from our study Good Intentions: What faiths say about how they invest, and how they can do more.
Al Jazeera English reports on faiths and the climate crisis
FaithInvest appeared in Al Jazeera English's earthrise series looking at what the faiths are doing to respond to the climate and ecological crises. Al Jazeera English is a 24-hour English-language news channel reaching 80 million homes in over 100 countries.
FaithInvest appears in the South China Morning Post
We recently visited Hong Kong to meet faith partners including Daoists (of which more later). The SCMP, one of Asia's leading newspapers, interviewed CEO Martin Palmer for an article entitled 'How religious groups are fighting climate change'.
The Investment Solutions team posts each week on topics related to faith-consistent investing. The posts are a valuable source of comment, insights and research relevant to faith-based asset owners. To see the posts, click HERE.
